Surah Taghabun – Meaning, Theme, Revelation and Benefits

Pondering over the virtues of Surahs enables us to grasp the greatness of Allah (SWT). Each Surah revealed by the Almighty is special and carries multiple benefits. Now, it is up to us how we take steps to reap the most benefits.

Surah Taghabun is the 64th Surah of the Quran. It is a Madani Surah and contains 18 verses.

The Meaning of Taghabun

The Surah derives its name from the 9th verse, which says – Dhalika yaum-ut-taghabun. The literal meaning of Taghabun is loss, deprivation, or regression. This word refers to the state of deprivation an individual or group experiences due to their actions.

The Theme of Surah Taghabun

The Surah centers on inviting people to believe in Allah and follow His commands while promoting virtuous behavior.

The first four verses address all individuals, while verses 5-10 target nonbelievers. Next, verses 11-18 address believers.

The first four verses describe fundamental truths:

  1. Allah created the universe and has complete control over everything.
  2. The universe has a purpose and will come to an end.
  3. Humans can choose to do right or wrong and are constantly monitored.
  4. Everyone will be held accountable by Allah on judgment day.

Nonbelievers will face punishment in Hell, while believers will be rewarded in Heaven.

The reasons why Allah destroyed previous nations were that they refused to believe in the messengers of Allah and also rejected to believe in the Hereafter. Later, Allah (SWT) gives instructions to those people who believe in Him.

He guides those who remain steadfast in their faith, while those who stray will lack guidance. One doesn’t have to express faith with words. It should be in the heart.

One should have complete faith and submit fully to Allah. The world is a test for believers, but it can also lead to distraction and temptation by Satan, so one must be cautious in their actions. Each person has limited ability, and Allah does not require the impossible. Instead, one is only asked to do what is within their means.

The Revelation of Surah Taghabun

This Surah was revealed when newly converted Muslims planned to migrate with the Prophet from Mecca to Medina but faced opposition from their families. Allah revealed this Surah to His Prophet (PBUH) to encourage these new Muslims.

Abdullah Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“After a man embraced Islam and decided to migrate and travel to Madina to settle down with the Prophet (PBUH)…His family and children prevent him and said: (For Allah’s sake, don’t leave your family and tribe and go to Madina without family and money), so some people got convinced and stopped traveling and stayed in Makkah. So Allah revealed this verse:

“O you who believe! Verily, among your wives and your children, there are enemies for you (i.e. may stop you from the obedience of Allah), therefore, beware of them!”
